Five years (so far) of learning briefs for the International Rescue Committee

What we were asked to do

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) produces a series of learning briefs that need to be sympathetically designed. These briefs are created through the Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) partnership between the IRC and Irish Aid, focusing on effectively and accountably responding to women and girls experiencing gender-based violence (GBV) in humanitarian settings. Their purpose is to share reflections and updates from both Global and Regional WPE forums. The briefs also require translation into French, Spanish, and Arabic. We have worked on this annually for the past five years and continue to thrive!

What we did

We create the English version of the report initially to establish the style, layout, approach to imagery, and content in line with IRC guidelines and branding. This foundational step allows us to set a cohesive visual identity that reflects the organisation’s standards. As we develop the English version, we focus on ensuring that the design elements, including typography and colour schemes, align with the established guidelines.

Image quality cannot always be assured, so we find ways to maintain the integrity of the original visuals while enhancing them for clarity and impact. Once the English version is complete, we then work on the translated versions, ensuring that the design remains consistent across all languages. Finally, we check to ensure that everything matches up visually and technically, maintaining a high standard of quality throughout the process. We continue to work on this annually, adapting and refining our approach to meet the evolving needs of the IRC and its audience.

What they thought

These briefs have become central to the IRC's planning and processes. Since we began our collaboration over five years ago, they have consistently gained traction and impact. The client finds the process straightforward and efficient, appreciating the seamless experience from start to finish.
